The national legislature is a bicameral federal parliament, consisting of an appointed Senate (105 members) and elected House of Commons (308 members).
Elections to the House of Commons are held on the third Monday of October in the fourth calendar year following the previous general election (subject to earlier confidence votes), with the last election having been held in January 2006.
Canadian citizens aged 18 and older are eligible to vote.
