Sector Summary

Manitoba's education system is developing a comprehensive and strategic approach to international education. Schools and institutions are engaged in international student programs, internationalizing the curriculum, study and work abroad programs, and international education contracts and development projects. These activities help prepare students to live and work in an international and multicultural society, strengthen international connections and partnerships, and create economic and employment opportunities for Manitobans.

  • During the 2009-2010 academic year, 5,292 international students came to Manitoba to pursue academic studies. The estimated total of tuition and academic fees paid by these students exceeded $35.40M.
  • The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada Final Report on the “Economic Impact of International Education in Canada” Roslyn Kunin and Associates, Inc. July 2009 reported international students in Manitoba, had an economic impact of over $131M and supported 1,500 jobs in the province.
  • Nearly 31% of all international students in Manitoba are from China/Hong Kong.
  • Students from Asia accounted for 58.2% and students from Africa account for 13.1% of the international post-secondary student population in 2008/09.
