Transformation de la pomme de terreThe value-added food and beverage processing industry is the largest manufacturing sector in Manitoba representing 26% of Manitoba total manufacturing revenue ($4.9 billion in 2012).  The sector represents about 15% of Manitoba exports and employs over 12,000 people in more than 450 facilities.  Manitoba’s contribution to Canada’s food and beverage processing industry is approximately 5% and it has been growing faster than the Canadian average over the past 10 years.

Manitoba offers the following distinct advantages for food/beverage processing businesses to grow and succeed:

  • Strong agronomic environment supported by a large and diverse range of crops and livestock suitable for food processing companies;
  • access to resources of world-class higher education institutions and research and development facilities (Food Development Centre, Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals, Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine, Canadian International Grains Institute);
  • Central geographic location, hence a key part of the Mid-Continent Trade corridor, connecting Canada to central North America and to Pacific and Atlantic gateways;
  • Access to affordable energy;
  • Abundant and high quality supply of water.
