The value-added food and beverage processing industry is the largest manufacturing sector in Manitoba representing 26% of Manitoba total manufacturing revenue ($4.9 billion in 2012). The sector represents about 15% of Manitoba exports and employs over 12,000 people in more than 450 facilities. Manitoba’s contribution to Canada’s food and beverage processing industry is approximately 5% and it has been growing faster than the Canadian average over the past 10 years.
Manitoba offers the following distinct advantages for food/beverage processing businesses to grow and succeed:
Strong agronomic environment supported by a large and diverse range of crops and livestock suitable for food processing companies;
access to resources of world-class higher education institutions and research and development facilities (Food Development Centre, Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals, Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine, Canadian International Grains Institute);
Central geographic location, hence a key part of the Mid-Continent Trade corridor, connecting Canada to central North America and to Pacific and Atlantic gateways;
Access to affordable energy;
Abundant and high quality supply of water.
