Summaries of earlier Reports are not available on this site. Some of the issues dealt with by Commission reports in the past include, among others:

  • Family law: equal sharing of marital property; modernization of laws protecting rights of surviving spouses; stalking

  • Judicial reform: more accountable methods of appointing and disciplining provincial judges and justices of the peace and magistrates; amalgamation of courts;

  • Health care: legal effect given to health care directives (living wills); modernization of laws relating to organ transplants;

  • Wills and estates: courts allowed to overlook errors in execution formalities of wills; modernization of laws protecting dependants of deceased persons; naming beneficiaries in RRSPs made legally valid;

  • Commercial law: abolition of outdated and ineffective laws respecting sales of businesses; payment of wages.

  • Property law: abolition of ancient and outdated common law rules respecting real property conveyancing;

  • Administrative law: devising fairer procedures to be followed by administrative agencies of government; regulating professions and occupations

  • Access to justice: simpler procedures for handling small claims in court; awarding of interest on successful court claims; periodic payment of damages for personal injury and death;

  • Tort law: modernization of occupiers' liability rules; abolition of outdated limits on liability of innkeepers serving intoxicated people; abolition of outdated law suits; tort liability for animals

  • Trusts: ethical investment criteria by trustees permitted; more modern investment rules for trusts.
