Crime Prevention

The Crime Prevention Unit within Corrections is responsible for the coordination and implementation of crime prevention policies and programs. Manitoba aims to prevent criminal behaviour before it takes root by focusing on the factors that put individuals, families, and community at risk. Factors include family violence, lack of access to resources, poor parenting skills, interrupted school problems, drug abuse, etc.

Manitoba also supports traditional crime prevention approaches such as "target hardening", e.g. home safety audits, better lighting, and istalling vehicle immobilizers to prevent auto theft.

The Unit continues to explore how to better meet the needs of the community and implement evidence-based programming to reduce individuals from being victimized or coming into contact with the law as offenders.

The Unit works with numerous departments such as, Health and Healthy Living, Education, Citizenship and Youth, Healthy Child Manitoba, Aboriginal and Northern Affairs, Manitoba Status of Women, and Family Services and Housing to coordinate and implement prevention initiatives.

The Unit works closely with the Healthy Child Manitoba Office (HCMO) to explore the most effective programs available to prevent crime. HCMO is the provincial early childhood development strategy and provides numerous programs such as the Triple P (Positive Parenting Program), Families First, and Healthy Baby. These programs are prime examples of crime prevention through social development initiatives.

The Unit, (HCMO), and Education, Citizenship and Youth are working in partnership to assist interested schools in administering the Life Skills Training Program by fall 2009. Life Skills Training is evidence-based substance abuse prevention initiative.

Crime prevention involves working to affect long-term change in high crime neighbourhoods. Manitoba Justice works with Neighbourhoods Alive! Manitoba's social and economic development strategy, to focus on housing, safety, employment and training, education and recreation.

Neighbourhood's Alive! has allocated over $3.0 million to safety related projects in high-risk communities e.g. School Resource Officer Program.

The Unit is working with the City of Winnipeg in the implementation of the City's policy.
