ENTRY Program is your first step to success

The ENTRY Program is a free series of classes that helps newcomers with their English skills and with adjusting to life in Manitoba. You should participate in the ENTRY Program as soon as you can after arriving in Winnipeg.

• Classes are each morning or evening, Monday to Friday.
  
  
• Classes are free.
  
  
• The ENTRY Program is four-weeks long.
  
  
• We will make you an appointment for the language assessment you need to be referred for English classes.



• Classes are grouped by level of English skills – beginner, intermediate and advanced.
  
  
• There is a one-week evening program for advanced English speakers with busy schedules.

Location
The ENTRY Program is located in downtown Winnipeg.

Registration
You must go in person to register, Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the program office, 4th Floor - 259 Portage Avenue. (You can also register on Fridays, but the office closes at 1 p.m.) You must bring your immigration papers and Manitoba Health Card.

Teachers
ENTRY Program classes are lead by teachers who are experienced in working with people from other countries. They make learning enjoyable in the classroom and by taking participants to places of interest in the city.

What is "orientation" ?
In the ENTRY Program you will learn about:

• Employment: working in Canada, where to get help to look for a job, the rules and culture of the Canadian workplace, understanding paycheques and income tax
  
  
• Doing daily tasks: getting around the city (using maps, public bus schedules, taxis); about Canadian money; the way Canadians shop; banking, using public services such as libraries (where you can get free Internet access)
  
  
• Using special services for immigrants: English language training; “settlement” services, finding a home, enrolling children in school
  
  
• Canadian laws: Canada has “family laws” for the treatment of husbands, wives and children that may be different than in your home country. There are also important laws about such things as driving and alcohol.
  
  
• Health: Most medical services are free in Canada. Topics include finding a family doctor, going to the hospital, emergencies, staying healthy.
  
  
• Computer access: There are computers for research, study and personal use in ENTRY Program classrooms.

The program is a great chance to develop a “social network” of friends and professional contacts. (In Canada, having a social network is crucial when you are looking for a job.)
