IMMIGRATION PLANNING GUIDE
IMPLEMENT THE PLAN

Share and promote your plan in the community

The plan has been implemented and recruitment to your community has begun. It is important at this point to manage community expectations. It is not unusual for people to think that immigrants will begin arriving weeks after your plan has been implemented. However, the reality is that immigration is a long-term process. Once you have implemented your plan, it is more likely that it will take a year before immigrants begin to arrive. However, this time is necessary for the community to continue to prepare.

An example of preparation might include enhancing multiculturalism and diversity training in schools, churches, and service clubs, supported by the local media. This will give the community an opportunity to think about cultural diversity, both personally and as a larger community.

Co-ordinate promotional activities

Several different promotional activities may be underway including advertising, recruitment shows and community tours. Monitoring, measuring and building tracking mechanisms into these activities will help identify what is working, what needs enhancement and what needs to be changed.

Prepare to deliver settlement services

Your community’s new immigrant families are due to arrive within a year. Connection and communication with your immigrant families prior to arrival is important. It helps the community to develop a greater connection and it also sends the message to your immigrant family that their arrival is anticipated and welcomed. Knowing exactly when your families are scheduled to arrive will allow you to extend a personal welcome and make transportation arrangements for them. As well, community service providers will have time to prepare and put the finishing touches on programs or changes they may be preparing to implement.

Share information about potential and actual arrivals

It''s important to share information about prospective, incoming and recently settled immigrants with Manitoba Immigration and Multiculturalism, but you need to make sure that your information sharing is consistent with the Manitoba Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection Act. Manitoba Immigration and Multiculturalism can help you navigate these issues.
