Communications including TV and Internet access are paid services. Radio (and TV received with an antenna) is free. Manitoba has several mainstream newspapers as well as publications serving particular ethnocultural communities. Cities and most towns have free public libraries.

Television
Winnipeg has three local, English television stations and one French-language station. (Brandon residents have a local version of Winnipeg's CBC channel.) If you get TV service from Shaw Cable there is a community channel that has some programs in other languages.

TV service comes to your home via cable, phone lines or satellite. (Local TV can be seen for free with a set-top antenna, but the reception is poor.) You must pay for these services. They offer many channels, mostly from the United States.

Internet
Home Internet is a paid service. You can, however, use a computer and get on the Internet for free at public libraries and other locations. Find free Internet access

Home phone
Home phone service can be obtained from the phone company, MTS, or from Shaw Cable, which offers VOIP.

Cell phone
The main cellular phone providers are MTS, Rogers and Telus. (Cell is a separate service from your home phone.) Be careful to check all terms and conditions before you sign a contract for service as airtime and other fees can result in an unexpectedly high monthly bill.

Service "bundles"
Since MTS and Shaw offer several communications services they offer them together at a slightly lower price. Outside Winnipeg for other service providers look in your local phone book.

Long-distance calling cards
Many people with friends or relatives overseas buy calling cards to make international calls. These are available at most convinence stores. Be sure to read the card thoroughly to see if there are surcharges or other conditions.

Radio Stations
These are some of Manitoba's radio stations. Each has news on their website (except CKJS):

  • CBC: (990 AM, 98.3 FM in Winnipeg; throughout Manitoba at different spots on radio dial), government-funded TV and radio broadcaster with local, national and international news & current affairs; website maintained as separate service with news 24-7
  • CKSB: (1050 AM), French CBC service
