Finding people from your home country

In Manitoba we pride ourselves on our "multiculturalism." Our society is strengthened because we are made up of people from many countries. Like you, people have settled made new homes in Manitoba for generations.

You will find people young and old who have come earlier your home country. Many want to help newcomers. Many have set up groups to promote their culture and support each other.

These "ethnocultural" organizations are supported by the Government of Manitoba through Immigration and Multiculturalism and other government departments.

For example, Winnipeg's Filipino community has a new community centre. Among the activities at the centre is a special gathering every Saturday for newcomers.

  • To find people from your community see the list of websites in our Multiculturalism section.
  • For newspapers in your first language or about your home country or Canadians with the same background see our List of ethnocultural publications.
  • The City of Winnipeg's citizen equity commuity has published a directory called Know your Multicultural Neighbour that profiles 29 ethnocultural communities where the immigration is very recent.

This booklet gives information on the local population, immigration history and the name of the association that each ethnocultural group has established.

  • Knowing that you are not alone may help you adjust to life in Manitoba.
