    Maps and directories

    Streets and roads
You can free maps at the airport. And they are for sale in most gas stations and convenience stores. You will find the location of immigrant services, government offices and other points of interest on Manitoba Immigration's Winnipeg Map for Newcomers (PDF 2mb).

    Public bus service
Winnipeg's public bus service is called Winnipeg Transit. Maps of bus routes and schedules are in the front of the Winnipeg phone book. You can also get them at information booths downtown at The Bay store, the Millenium Library and in the pedestrian concourse under Portage and Main; by phoning 986-5700, or on the Winnipeg Transit website.

    Telephone books
It is easy to find information in phone directories. They list every business and government office, and most people, in the area they serve. The White Pages book is an alphabetical listing of phone numbers and street addresses of people and businesses (use the last name first, eg. Look for John Smith under S, for Smith).

The Yellow Pages is a separate book that lists businesses – restaurants, services, stores, etc. – by subject or product. The phone books also have sections for bus maps, postal codes, government offices, community services such as libraries, health, visitor and emergency information. (In any life-threatening emergency simply phone the number 911.)

You can get free phone books when you arrange for phone service in your home. Or, visit a MTS Connect Store.

    immigratemanitoba.com
Manitoba Immigration and Multiculturalism posts on this website news, information and notice of events of interest to newcomers and people and agencies that serve immigrants. You will find information on more topics on the government-wide site, manitoba.ca.

    Public libraries and Internet
There are free libraries in each area of the city and in most towns. They are an excellent source of information. Most provide free Internet access. You may also find books and other publications in your native language. Find a branch with the online directory.
