Get credit for your work experience and education
Receiving Canadian permanent resident status does not mean that you can immediately start working in your occupation. You may need to have your qualifications – education and experience – assessed.
Regulated Occupations
Some professions and trades are "regulated occupations." Each regulated occupation has an association or government body that assesses qualifications. Before you can work they must grant you a licence. See Professions or Trades.
Educational credentials
Even if you want to work in a non-regulated occupation, an employer or school may ask to see verification of the education or training you received in your home country and how it compares to Manitoba standards. When this is the case you can seek assistance from the Academic Credentials Assessment Service.
Helping you re-start your career
The Settlement and Labour Market Services Branch has programs that may help as you work toward getting your qualifications recognized so you can re-start your career in Manitoba.
- Special projects: We offer professionals assistance such as "bridging programs," career guides, and free classes to learn the English specific to your occupation.
- Financial help for professionals: The Credentials Recognition Program offers financial assistance to newcomers who are pursuing a professional licence.
- Support for apprentices: You may be able to take advantage of government programs that assist people during their apprenticeship.
- Fairness in qualifications recognition: Manitoba has proposed a law that would ensure the fair treatment of internationally educated people seeking professional registration from a Manitoba regulatory body.
