Get job search skills, education & training

There are free programs that help newcomers find work. They teach job search skills. They may help you get the training you need. Some programs may introduce participants to potential employers.

ENTRY Program
This free orientation program is the first step for all newcomers to learn about life in Manitoba including how to find a job.

Work Start: Language for Employment
This free program helps you learn the English language skills you need to get a starting-level job. It teaches job search skills and how to adjust to the Canadian workplace.

Employment Projects of Winnipeg
This free service has job preparation and job search classes for newcomers who are highly skilled, tradespeople, semi-skilled or entry-level job-seekers. There are also computer and language classes. To enrol you must speak English fairly well (at least a Canadian Language Benchmark Level 5).

Success Skills Centre
For immigrant professionals this organization offers specialized employment and career counselling. The centre offers intensive job-search preparation & support and career training. You must have at least a Canadian Language Benchmark Level 5

Employment Solutions for Immigrant Youth
This program helps young people decide the direction they should take. You will learn to overcome challenges and become successfully employed. You must have at least a Canadian Language Benchmark Level 5. There are other requirements. Get more information by e-mail or by phoning 944-8833.

Victor Mager Adult Education & Training Centre
This free program provides newcomers with guidance, support and training to find a job. Participants must meet Employment Income, Employment & Income Assistance or National Child Benefit criteria.

International Centre of Winnipeg
The centre has free classes for immigrants with beginner English (Canadian Language Benchmark 3 - 4). Its programs help immigrants find jobs or training.

Jewish Child and Family Services
This community organization’s free classes include employment preparation, job placement and referral to vocational training. Services are in Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Slavic languages and Hebrew.

Pluri-Elles Manitoba
Ces services gratuits sont offerts en français. Ils comprennent de l'aide à la recherche d'emploi et des cours d'alphabétisation en langue française.

Youth Employment Network
This is a free three-week program for newcomers age 15 to 30 years. You should have the Manitoba equivalent of Grade 10. The program has career planning and counseling, job placement and helps find training opportunities.

Overcoming other barriers to employment

  • English language classes: If poor language skills are preventing you from getting a job you should enroll in a free English class. Go to our Learning English section for more information.

  • Post-secondary education: Consider upgrading your skills with academic study or vocational. For more information go to our page Education & Training.

  • Foreign credentials: Go to our section Qualifications Recognition to learn how to have your overseas educational and work qualifications recognized so you can find a career in your regulated occupation. This section also explains: free programs that may be available to help you get licensed to practise a regulated profession such as engineering or accounting.
