An assessment of the potential dust exposure among crematoria workers in the Province
of Manitoba was conducted by the Workplace Safety and Health Branch of the
Department of Manitoba Labour and Immigration. These results have been published by the American Conference of Governmental
Industrial Hygienists.
The study titled "Dust Exposures and Ventilation Control in the Crematorium"
is published in the latest issue of Applied Occupational and Environmental Hygiene.
All ten crematoria in the province participated in the study. Monitoring was conducted
during the processing of the bone ash remains. Worker's personal exposure for the
respirable particulate was minimal, and for the inhalable particulate ranged from below
the lower detection limit to 12.3 mg/m3. Engineering controls were installed in some
crematoria. Good hygiene practices, respiratory protection and protective clothing were
recommended.
