Formaldehyde Exposure in the Funeral Industry
An assessment of formaldehyde exposure was conducted among embalmers in the funeral
industry of Manitoba Canada. Health effects identified among embalmers included irritation
of the eyes, nose and throat, chest tightness, headaches and fatigue. 36 embalmings were
monitored in 18 chapels. Personal formaldehyde exposures of embalmers during an intact
body preparation (less than one hour) ranged from 0.12 to 5.64 mg/m3. During an autopsy
preparation (under two hours) exposures ranged from 0.11 to 4.13 mg/m3. Of the 18 chapels
monitored, 83% had levels in excess of the current international standard of 0.37 mg/m3.
An upgrading of engineering controls, improved work practices and use of personal
protective equipment was required.
