Currently in Canada, senators are appointed by the Governor
General on the recommendation of the Prime Minister to serve until age 75.
The federal government has committed to moving forward with senate reform.
In response, the Manitoba Legislative Assembly established an all party
committee in 2008 to ask Manitobans how senators could be elected. An
all-party sub-committee held public meetings around the province from
January to May of 2009 to ask Manitobans how senators should be elected to
represent the province in the Senate. On November 9, 2009 the Special
Committee on Senate Reform adopted a report containing recommendations, on
division. The report was tabled in the House on December 1, 2009. This
process reflected legislation passed in the Manitoba Legislature in 2006. |
