Matters Under Consideration: Bill (No. 6) – The Fortified Buildings Act/Loi sur les bâtiments fortifiés Membership Resignations / Elections: At the May 13, 2002 meeting, Mr. Martindale was elected as Chairperson. On motion of Mr. Martindale, the Report of the Committee was received. ______________________________ By leave, Hon. Mr. Mackintosh introduced Bill (No. 16) – The Class Proceedings Act/Loi sur les recours collectifs, and outlined the purposes thereof, it was read a First Time. ______________________________ Pursuant to Rule 23(1), Mrs. Driedger, Messrs. Jennissen and Hawranik, Ms. Cerilli and Mr. Dyck made Members’ Statements. ______________________________ The House resolving into the Committee of Supply. And the House continuing in Committee, the Proceedings were interrupted at 5:00 p.m. for Private Members' Business. ______________________________ Mr. Aglugub moved: Resolution No. 5: Family Reunification
WHEREAS the ability of individuals to reunite with their family members residing in Canada is an important part of our humanitarian heritage; and
WHEREAS the current criteria for family class sponsorship of immigrants places all cities with populations over 500,000 into one category; and
WHEREAS this criteria places Winnipeg in the same category as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver; and
WHEREAS the cost of living in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal is significantly higher than in Winnipeg; and
WHEREAS family sponsorship has proven to be very successful in retaining immigrants in Manitoba; and
WHEREAS these federal criteria are putting Manitoba at a disadvantage in its ability to attract new immigrants.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba urge the Federal Government to create a new category of family sponsorship for Winnipeg and other cities of similar size to reflect the lower cost of living; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Assembly direct the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly to send a copy of this resolution to all Members of Parliament from Manitoba.
