CLASSROOM IN THE LEGISLATURE
FOR STUDENTS
Welcome to the "For Students" link for the Classroom in the
Legislature. Here you will find information and puzzles to help you learn
about the Legislative Assembly.
There are 57 Members of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba. Each MLA
represents a "constituency". Each MLA is assigned a specific seat in the
Legislative Chamber and is only allowed to speak and to vote from that seat.
The head of the government in each province is the Premier.
The Leader of the Official Opposition is the person whose party has the next
highest number of members following a general election.
The person who maintains order in the Chamber is the Speaker. The Speaker is
elected by the other MLAs in a secret ballot election.
The Lieutenant Governor is the person appointed by the Prime Minister to
represent the Queen in each of the provinces. Manitoba's Lieutenant Governor
is the Honourable John Harvard.
A "Bill" is a proposed law. A Bill must pass through several steps before it
can become a law. When a Bill is passed by the Legislature it becomes an
"Act" or a "Statute".
The Lieutenant Governor is the person appointed by the Prime Minister to
represent the Queen in each of the provinces. Manitoba's Lieutenant Governor
is the Honourable John Harvard.
The Legislative Chamber is in the shape of a horseshoe.
The governing party sits to the Speaker's
right and the opposition parties sit to the Speaker's left.
The people sitting in the middle of the
room at the big table are the Clerks-at-the-Table.
The Sergeant-at-Arms is responsible for the
security in the Chamber. The Mace that the Sergeant-at-Arms was at one time
used as a weapon. For more information, please refer to the Fact Sheets at:
