Teachers' Institute on Parliamentary Democracy

 


APPLICATIONS ARE INVITED FOR THE THIRD ANNUAL TEACHERS' INSTITUTE ON PARLIAMENTARY DEMOCRACY
Saturday, April 17 to Tuesday, April 20, 2010


The deadline for applications for the April 17 - April 20, 2010 Teachers' Institute on Parliamentary Democracy is February 19, 2010.



The Teachers' Institute is a Legislative Assembly of Manitoba program, hosted and coordinated by the Office of the Speaker with the support of all Members of the Legislative Assembly and the Department of Education. It is an exciting opportunity for educators to experience a first hand view of democracy at work in our province.


The objectives of the Institute are:

 

  • To enhance educator understanding of the parliamentary process

 

  • To involve and empower educator participants to promote active, responsible citizenship

 

  • To provide opportunities for educators for networking, sharing of ideas, resources and methodologies

 

  • To stimulate thinking about the realities of democracy and its importance to our society

 

  • To engage educators in discussion to further promote an understanding and awareness of the Legislature and its relevance

 

  • To provide educators with greater knowledge and enthusiasm to teach new materials related to the parliamentary process.

 

  • To facilitate the development of new educational materials on the topic of Parliamentary Democracy, which will be available on line to other educators.

 

This is an intensive 4-day Institute during which educators will have the opportunity to experience the following:

  • Welcome by the Speaker of the House
     

  • Tours of the Legislative Building, Legislative Library, Court of Queen's Bench and Government House

 

  • Briefings by Legislative Assembly Officers, MLAs including Government Members and Members of the Opposition, Legislative Counsel, the Media and keynote speakers

 

  • Attend Routine Proceedings, including Question Period

 

  • Collaborate in the development of lessons and materials relevant to Parliamentary Democracy


Applications must be received no later than February 19, 2010. Applications will be screened with 20 being accepted for attendance at the Institute. A registration fee of $100.00 will be required upon acceptance. Transportation, accommodation and meals are provided by the Institute. Substitute costs are the responsibility of the participating school division.

Note: If the Legislative Assembly is not in session at that time, the Institute will be postponed to a later date.
