Homesickness

It seems that Kennedy’s visit to Orkney the year before made him miss the comforts and companionship of his homeland. In August 1821, he wrote to his brother and sister from Norway House with news of the merger and his promotion. In the letter, he tells them that he “felt the last winter very dull and solitary” after his brief taste of “civilized life” two winters before.
