Spokane House

Spokane House was acquired by the Hudson’s Bay Company after its amalgamation with the North West Company, and served as the principle distributing and wintering point for the Upper Columbia, Kootenay and Flathead trade. Alexander Kennedy arrived there in October 1822, after a three-month journey. He traveled by river through what are now Saskatchewan and Alberta, crossed the first range of the Rocky Mountains at the Athabasca Pass, descended the mountains, and followed the Columbia River until it met the Spokane. The region and people he encountered were very different from any he had seen before.
