Land at Red River
The Red River settlement, established in 1812, was made up of Scottish settlers, retired trappers and fur traders, and the Métis, descendants of marriages between the British and French and First Nations people. The original agreement between the Hudson’s Bay Company and Lord Selkirk entitled employees retiring from the company’s service to a grant of land in the settlement. The lots that former servants received all had river access and varied in size according to their rank within the company. The Kennedys, like many other families of retiring HBC men, took a piece of land in the parish of St. Andrew’s.
