Kennedy’s legacy
Some of Alexander and Aggathas Kennedy’s children and grandchildren went on to become prominent members of the community, both in the Red River Settlement and elsewhere. John and Roderick both became doctors: Roderick in Bath, Ontario and John in the Columbia District. John retired to Victoria and represented Nanaimo in the first Legislative Assembly. William had wished to study medicine, but instead worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company from 1833 until 1846. He went on to lead two of the arctic expeditions Lady Franklin sent out in search of her lost husband.
Elizabeth Setter, Kennedy’s granddaughter, married John Norquay, who became Premier of Manitoba. Alexander Kennedy Isbister, Kennedy’s grandson, had an active career as an educationalist and representative of the Métis people.
