In the second year of the strategy, Rewarding Work will focus on assisting people to prepare for and make a smooth transition from income assistance to work. Examples include:
HELP FOR RENT
In July 2008, shelter rates for non-disabled single adults on income assistance will increase from $271 to $285 per month. Single adults (and childless couples) will also get an additional $35 per month directly from the Manitoba Shelter Benefit, resulting in an increase of 18%. Rooming house rates will increase from $236 to $285, plus $35 directly from the Manitoba Shelter Benefit - a 36% increase.
Beginning in November 2008, non-disabled single adults and childless couples who leave income assistance for work and live in private rent will be eligible for the Rewarding Work Rent Allowance of $50 per month for up to one year to support their transition off the program.
GET STARTED! BENEFIT
Beginning February 2009, participants who leave income assistance for work will receive a one-time payment to assist with job-related expenses, such as work clothing. The allowance will be $175 for single adults and childless couples, $250 for non-disabled families with children, and $325 for persons with disabilities.
