Sustainable Development delivers its site preparation program via tendered contracts, which may be area or hourly-based rates, administered by Regional Operations offices throughout Manitoba.
These contracts are advertised as required, through the Winnipeg Free Press and sometimes in rural Manitoba newspapers. The contracts may also be listed in the MERX on-line purchasing system.
Part of the contract process includes mandatory site viewing conferences where potential bidders visit all sites to be treated and can discuss site issues and logistics with Regional Operations staff. Information and schedules are included in the advertisements.
The advertisements include the specifications of type of equipment to be provided by the contractor. Manitoba supplies the silviculture equipment which is to be used for the contract and supervises its attachment to the contracted prime mover. A Satellite-based Global Positioning System called "Silvitracs" is also attached to the equipment to give a highly accurate record and map of the project. All transportation, fuel and supplies are the contractors responsibility.
In some cases these contracts also require the application of vegetation management chemicals. In these cases, the operator must also have a valid pesticide applicators license.
