The Manitoba Age-Friendly Initiative provides the Age Friendly Rural Remote Communities: A Guide to assist communities to connect with seniors and identify barriers and concerns.

The guide recommends the following categories be examined as part of developing an age-friendly community:

  • outdoor space and buildings
  • transportation
  • housing
  • respect and social inclusion
  • social participation
  • communication and information
  • civic participation and employment
  • community support and health services

  • Midwestern District (Strathclair) Connecting Communities Day Report
    On June 7, 2016, approximately 19 participants representing communities of Yellowhead (Shoal Lake/Strathclair); Hamiota; Harrison Park (Sandy Lake); Prairieview; Westlake; Gladstone; Rossburn; Killarney; Hartney; and Gilbert Plains, attended the Age-Friendly Connecting Communities Day in Strathclair, Manitoba. The objective was to bring Age-Friendly communities of the Midwestern District to connect, share best practices, challenges and resources.
  • Eastern District (Lac du Bonnet) Connecting Communities Day Report
    On May 16, 2016, 19 participants representing communities of Beausejour,Lac du Bonnet; Pinawa; Powerview Pine Falls; Springfield; Victoria Beach; Rural Municipality of Victoria Beach, and Whitemouth attended the Age-Friendly Connecting Communities Day in Lac Du Bonnet, Manitoba. The objective of the event was to bring Age-Friendly communities of the Eastern District to connect, share best practices, available resources and discuss challenges.
  • Summary of the Central Age-Friendly Connecting Communities Day
    Report on the Age-Friendly Connecting Communities Day held in Winkler, Manitoba on May 27, 2015. Twelve Central District community representatives from Notre Dame de Lourdes, Morris, Winkler, Portage la Prairie, & Plum Coulee attended the day.
  • Summary of the Interlake Age-Friendly Connecting Communities Day
    Report on the Age-Friendly Connecting Communities Day held in Gimli, Manitoba on June 11, 2015. Twenty-one Interlake District community representatives from Arborg, Dunnottar, Gimli, Selkirk, St. Laurent, Stonewall/ RM of Rockwood, Teulon, Winnipeg Beach, & a business/community developer with Community Futures West Interlake (working with Age-Friendly communities in West Interlake) attended the day.
  • Summary of the Eastern Age-Friendly Connecting Communities Day
    Report on the Age-Friendly Connecting Communities Day held in Steinbach, Manitoba on June 9, 2015. Twenty-one Eastern District community representatives from Steinbach, Beausejour, De Salaberry, Pine Falls, Pinawa, Lac du Bonnet, Vita, Stuartburn & Whitemouth attended the day.
