A Best Practices Guide for the Prevention of
Falls Among Seniors Living in the Community
This Guide was prepared for the Federal, Provincial, Territorial
Ministers Responsible for Seniors in response to the Ministers' request for a review of
falls prevention programs and practices. The purpose of this guide is to provide the
evidence for effective approaches for reducing injury among seniors and the efficient
means of delivering prevention programs. The Guide presents the findings of a systematic
review of falls prevention programs and focuses on thirty-four studies that evaluated the
effectiveness of falls prevention strategies for community-dwelling seniors. Based on
these studies, the Guide then discusses effective interventions and strategies.
