  • In Manitoba, the most common type of elder abuse is emotional and financial.  
  • According to Canadian research, 4 to 10 per cent of older adults will experience some form of abuse or neglect in their later years. That means that 6,000 to 16,000 older Manitobans are experiencing abuse right now.
  • Only one in five cases of elder abuse comes to the attention of those who can help. 
  • World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was launched by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) on June 15th, 2006
  • The theme for WEAAD is My World…Your World…Our World – Free of Elder Abuse.
  • The state of knowledge regarding elder abuse is 3 decades behind child abuse and 1 decade behind domestic violence.
  • Statistics Canada reported that when family members were indentified as the abusers, 42% were adult children and 31% were spouses
