Red River College:
Overview

From the Laboratory to the Real World
Applying Knowledge, Delivering Results

Red River College of Applied Arts, Science and Technology serves nearly 40,000 students each year and employs more than 900 full and part-time employees throughout Manitoba. Through its various programs, offered at two main campus sites – the Notre Dame campus and the new, state-of-the-art Princess Street campus – Red River College has gained a reputation for graduating skilled, knowledgeable and motivated individuals, with the right qualifications to immediately become contributing members of the workforce. The college has earned this solid reputation for success through its ability to change and adapt quickly, as dictated by the developments and demands of students, business and the community.

Applied research means applying new or existing knowledge to solve real-world challenges – a principal element in the overall success of Red River programs and students. To continue Red River College's longstanding tradition of applied research and training excellence in Manitoba, the college has established the office of Applied Research & Commercialization (AR&C).

Supporting Innovation

AR&C provides support for applied research, knowledge transfer, prototyping, product development, testing, and commercialization. In addition, AR&C helps business and industry access Red River College's expertise to find practical, innovative solutions that deliver results.

Since its inception, AR&C has worked to establish itself within the college and the technology transfer community. The office has defined itself by finalizing relevant policies, procedures, and practices. It has also identified the college's research potential by developing an inventory of applied research-oriented expertise and capabilities.

Research Focus Areas

AR&C has identified six applied research focus areas based on existing expertise, sectoral demand and external partnership synergy:

  • Information and Communications Technology and Digital Multimedia
  • Advanced Manufacturing Design Technology
  • Biotechnology and Life Sciences
  • Human Care Services
  • Renewable Energy
  • Sustainable Infrastructure Technology

New Lab Dedicated to Sustainable Infrastructure Research

One of Red River College's newest undertakings is the establishment of The Centre for Applied Research in Sustainable Infrastructure (CARSI), the first laboratory facility dedicated to applied research at a Manitoba college. CARSI's state-of-the-art, 930 square-metre (10,000 square-foot) research facility incorporates all sustainable infrastructure research in a single building. CARSI's main objective is to conduct innovative and advanced applied research that leads to the development of emerging, sustainable infrastructure technologies.

One-Stop-Shop: Your Gateway to Knowledge

The office of Applied Research and Commercialization acts as a one-stop shop for both external and internal parties. AR&C serves as the contact point for industry seeking to tap into the college's applied research capabilities, and for granting agencies and councils. External activities also include designing and delivering industry-focused outreach programs, networking and business development.

Internally, AR&C helps develop applied research proposals, acquires and administers grants and contracts, assesses applied research opportunities and the resulting technologies, starts up and operates applied-research pilot projects, manages intellectual property and engages in knowledge or technology-transfer and commercialization activities.

Consider the office of Applied Research and Commercialization your gateway to the vast base of knowledge, research, skills, and talents that reside at Manitoba's second-largest, post-secondary educational institution.
