What is in the Apprenticeship Training Package?

At the start of an apprenticeship, the apprentice will receive the following:

Trade Portfolio – The Apprentice Trade Portfolio is a comprehensive document providing useful information about their apprenticeship training. It is composed of the following:

  1. Glossary of apprenticeship training terminology
  2. Technical training course and unit outlines
  3. Technical training Profile Chart and a Level Chart
  4. Practical Training Record Book
  5. Report of Hours
  • Practical Training Record Book - This book, a major component of the Apprentice portfolio, documents the apprentice’s progress in the certification process. It provides a means of recording:
    • trade skills learned through practical experience that are required for certification (Verification of Tasks)
    • all the detailed tasks and sub-tasks that are part of the scope of the trade (Task Checklist)
    • apprenticeable hours worked in the trade (Report of Hours Form)
    • comments regarding the apprentice’s on-the-job progress
  • Report of Hours (blue book) - Used to record hours worked. The employer/journeyperson must document and verify the apprentice’s hours and record these hours in the Report of Hours booklet. Each time the apprentice is called to attend technical training, or if the apprentice changes employers, the employer is required to update the Report of Hours. Only hours documented by the employer/journeyperson in the Report of Hours will count towards the accumulated hours required to complete the practical training component of Apprenticeship training. The Report of Hours must be submitted to the Apprenticeship Branch on the first day of technical training.
*If an apprentice changes employers, the Report of Hours must be updated and submitted to the Apprenticeship branch.

* For trades that currently do not have an Apprentice Portfolio, technical training instructors follow and deliver Apprenticeship Branch approved curriculum. Until Apprentice Portfolios are available for these trades, the National Occupational Analysis (NOA) or Provincial Occupational Analysis (POA), is the basis of instruction and is a valuable reference resource. Occupational analyses are available from the Apprenticeship Branch free of charge. The NOA can also be accessed at www.red-seal.ca/Site/trades/analist_e.htm
