Aboriginal Apprenticeship Training

Young man working on a projectThere is a high demand for skilled labour in northern and rural Manitoba, as well as First Nations and Métis communities. Apprenticeship Manitoba is developing partnerships with a number of communities to deliver relevant training to fill their need for skilled journeypersons.

The community-based apprenticeship training initiative is a partnership between Apprenticeship Manitoba and the individual First Nations and Métis communities.

The Community-Based Training initiative allows apprentices to gain on-the-job experience in their communities while staying in their community to complete their technical training. As a result, retention rates are high since apprentices don't have to leave home to take their regular technical training component of their trade at school. Communities proved required classroom/shop space, tools and equipment, while Apprenticeship instruction is organized through one of its training providers (RRC, ACC or UCN).

Two Mobile Training Labs housed at Red River College are now available to travel the province and meet the apprenticeship training demand from communities which may not have access to required classroom space, tools and equipment.

Community Based Training has been offered in the trades of Carpentry, Construction and Industrial Electrician, Plumbing, Industrial Mechanic and Millwright in many rural communitites across Manitoba.

Community-Based Training in Your Community

Community-Based Training opportunities in Manitoba are based on labour demand, available instruction and, therefore, vary from year to year. If you are in a community that may benefit from this initiative, please send your request to apprenticeship@gov.mb.ca.

For more information regarding Community Based Apprenticeship, contact Apprenticeship Manitoba.

Also review sections on Supports & Services, and Finances for additional information to assist with your apprenticeship training.
