Historical Overview - Apprenticeship

  • 1944 - Introduction of structured apprenticeship training in Manitoba to reintegrate returning war vets into workplace
  • 1956 - Establishment of Interprovincial Training Standards-Red Seal Certification
  • 1973 - The Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act was proclaimed in Manitoba
  • 2001 - Implementation of the Community-Based Training Program for Northern Aboriginal Apprentices

Training

  • 80% on-the job practical training, 20% is technical/in-school based trainingTechnical training in most programs is available in-class or by distance education
  • Training institutions include Red River College (Winnipeg), Red River College/Stevenson Aviation & Aerospace Training Centre (Southport, MB), University College of the North (The Pas, MB), Assiniboine Community College(Brandon, MB), Southern Alberta Institute of Technology-SAIT, (Calgary, AB), Northern Alberta Institute of Technology-NAIT (Edmonton, AB), Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology-SIAST, (Moose Jaw & Saskatoon, SK)

Major Scholarships & Awards

  • Apprenticeship Incentive Grant(AIG), effective January 2007, providing $1,000/year to apprentices in the first two years of an apprenticeship program
  • Alberta Centennial Scholarship, $2,005 awarded to 25 apprentices in the second last or final year of an apprenticeship program
  • Other scholarships & awards from various organizations are offered throughout the year
