SYAO Program Enhancements

As per the SYAO Program Evaluation Review in 2007 and recommendations from the Apprenticeship Futures Commission, two of the following recommendations have been implemented: (1) to establish minimum wages for all SYAO apprentices (minimum wage plus 10%) and (2) to extend eligibility to grade 10 students who are a minimum of 16 years of age. New Manitoba Tax Credit for Employers

Manitoba’s new tax credit, along with the existing federal tax credit for levels one and two, will mean an incentive to retain apprentices will be in place through all levels of an apprenticeship and will help encourage employers to retain apprentices until their training is complete.

New Essential Skills Drop-In Centre for the Trades

This centre provides workplace essential skills upgrading for apprentices in the workplace, trade qualifiers, trades professionals studying for exams, anyone considering a trades career.

RRC GETT Camp- Attracting Female Youth to the Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship.

Girls Exploring Trades and Technology(GETT) Camp is designed to introduce girls ages 12-14 to non-traditional options and reinforces the relevance of taking science, advanced math, technical and industrial subjects. Three, five day camps held in July at the RRC Carpentry shop introduced shop safety, use of power tools and building and painting techniques. Each team of two, assembled a full-size soap box race car under the supervision of camp staff.

New Funding Incentives for Apprenticeship

The future is looking bright for those involved in apprenticeship training.
Two new funding initiatives have been introduced that will encourage participation in apprenticeship training.
-Apprentices will be eligible to redeem a 60% Provincial Tuition Rebate upon apprenticeship program completion
-Employers will be eligible to apply for the Journeypersons Hiring Incentive (J-HI), under the new Co-operative Education and Apprenticeship Tax Credit Program.

Call for Apprenticeship Provincial Trade Advisory Committee Members (PTACs)

The Apprenticeship Branch is currently seeking individuals who are interested in representing industry in a Manitoba designated trade, participating in the apprenticeship and industry training decision making, helping Manitoba apprentices obtain certification and mobility through apprenticeship training and sharing enthusiasm and expertise in the trade with others. Service Canada has released more information about the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant for apprentices, Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit for employers who hire apprentices and tool deductions for employed trades professionals.

Apprenticeship Manitoba will exhibit at this show, which provides knowledge and skills required to stay ahead in the beauty business. Skills Manitoba Competition
Red River College-Notre Dame Campus

Over 475 high school, post secondary and apprentice students compete in 42 skilled trades and technology contests in six industry sectors. A Young Women’s Conference is also held in conjunction with this event in order to promote opportunities in the skilled trades to gr. 8 girls in the southeastern Manitoba region.

Winnipeg Construction Expo
Red River Exhibition Grounds

The Apprenticeship Branch is participating in the First Annual Manitoba Construction Career Expo targeted at grades 9 & 10. The Expo is focused on interactive hands-on activities and displays from various trades within the construction sector. Space is limited. Schools are required to register early.
