Red Seal Trades

The Interprovincial Standards "Red Seal" Program

Red Seal logoThis program was established to provide greater mobility for skilled workers wanting to move from one part of Canada to another. It also encourages the standardization of Provincial/Territorial training and certification programs.

There are over 50 designated trades in Manitoba in which one can apprentice and, if successful, earn a Certificate of Qualification. Of these, 45 trades have interprovincial or "Red Seal" status.

In Manitoba, when apprentices write their final examinations in a "Red Seal" trade and pass the examination with a minimum mark of 70 per cent, they receive an interprovincial Certificate of Qualification. Manitoba journeypersons who hold a provincial Certificate of Qualification in a "Red Seal" trade can apply to write the interprovincial examination. Everyone certified in interprovincially recognized trades has a "Red Seal" attached to their Certificate of Qualification and to their journeyperson Pocket Card.

For employers in other jurisdictions, the Interprovincial Standards Program is an assurance of quality training and certification to nationally recognized standards. For journeypersons it means that with an interprovincical Certificate of Qualification, they can move to and work in other jurisdictions without taking further testing or examinations. However, some jurisdictions have additional licencing requirements, so a journeyperson may have to meet these employment requirements.
