Where the Spirit Lives - Aboriginal Tourism in Manitoba
Learn to see Manitoba’s abundance and diversity of lands, waters, wildlife and peoples with new eyes. Seven distinct groups of Aboriginal People live here in the heart of Turtle Island: Cree, Ojibway, Oji-Cree, Dene, Dakota Sioux, Métis and Inuit; each has its own unique history and culture.
Each summer, in the urban centre of Winnipeg, the White Buffalo Spiritual Society Inc. hosts an Indigenous Tribal Village at The Forks; enjoy a variety of programs in this teepee village including storytelling and sharing circles, artisans and art displays, traditional dancing and drumming, Pow wows and canoe building. For a truly spectacular experience of Aboriginal culture, don’t miss the 10-day Manito Ahbee Aboriginal Festival in early November at the MTS Centre in downtown Winnipeg, featuring an International Competition Pow Wow, Indigenous Marketplace and Trade Show and multi-venue music festival, highlighted by the live, nationally televised Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards Show.
