Past Mission:

Business Field Visit to China:
Pursuing Projects in Urban Development, March 10 to 18, 2005

Purpose of the PSLO Business Field Visit to China

The Canadian PSLO Network to the World Bank Group organized this mission to introduce Canadian firms to the business opportunities associated with World Bank-funded projects in the urban development sector (including transport, water, environment, and energy) in China and to facilitate the introduction of Canadian companies to the Chinese government executing agencies implementing these projects.

Building a solid partnership and economic relationship with China is a priority of the Canadian Government.  Prime Minster Martin will visit China in January 2005 and in an address to members of the Canada-China Business Council on December 6, 2004 he stated that “Canadian businesses, large and small should be … developing and implementing strategies for China”.

The PSLO Business Field Visit to China will be a practical, working-level mission focused on business development.  Firms should view their participation in this Field Visit as one component of their business development strategy for China. This Field Visit will set the foundation for pursing World Bank-funded projects and open the door for additional opportunities with the private sector in China.

Objectives of the Business Field Visit

  • Create a high level of awareness on the part of the Canadian firms of the project requirements and constraints, and their level of competitiveness in accessing World Bank-financed projects in China.
  • Identify the specific opportunities in each World Bank-funded project and promote Canadian company capabilities for those projects to the Chinese government executing agencies responsible for procurement.
  • Inform World Bank staff in China of the capabilities and interests of Canadian firms in relation to development projects in China.
  • Initiate and maintain working relations with representatives of the World Bank’s Country Office.

World Bank-supported projects are in all major sectors of the economy and are distributed across the country. In terms of lending amounts, China is the World Bank’s largest borrower and one of the best performing member countries in project implementation.

In 2004, the World Bank approved nine loans to China valued at US$ 1.2 billion.
