Positive Parenting Program (Triple P)

Triple P: Small changes can make a big difference with the Positive Parenting Program

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Triple P?

Children need a safe, secure, loving home to do well. The Triple P program helps parents create a loving and supportive family setting. It helps parents reduce stress while ensuring safe, stimulating, learning for children.

The Triple P program is an effective, positive approach to raising children. It encourages positive, caring relationships between parents and their children. With positive parenting, healthy children develop strong, nurturing relationships, good communication and positive attention.

The program helps parents raise healthy, confident children who have the skills to do well at school and deal well with others.

How does Triple P work?

Triple P offers parents of young children practical, easy-to-use information and support – from simple tip sheets, to individual advice, to group discussions and family counselling.

Triple P is based on five main building blocks:

  • make a safe, interesting home
  • create a positive learning environment
  • give positive, consistent guidance
  • have realistic expectations
  • take care of yourself as a parent

The Triple P training model assumes that parents will have different needs and require various levels of support. Triple P is based on a flexible system of increasing intensity: from offering general information for all parents, to mid-range guidance (tip sheets, parenting advice, workshops), to offering more advanced clinical help for parents who are experiencing significant behavioural issues with their children.

Which Triple P option is best for me?

Triple P practitioners will meet with you and decide the best level of Triple P to suit your specific needs. If you want to talk about how to give your kids the best start in life or discuss major family problems, then we can find the Triple P level that suits your needs.

Who runs the Triple P programs? Who are the practitioners?

The Triple P program is operated by Healthy Child Manitoba. A wide variety of service providers across Manitoba are trained and offer Triple P services.

Here are some examples of people who may help you get Triple P information. They can also help you find support if your family has a major parenting challenge:

  • teachers
  • health care workers
  • social services agency and community workers
  • family resource centre workers
  • child care providers

See directory for a listing of organizations throughout the Province offering Triple P Services.

What will I learn at a Triple P session?

Triple P suggests simple routines and small changes that can make a big difference to your family. It helps you understand the way your family works, and uses the things you already say, think, feel and do in new ways that help:

  • create a stable, supportive family
  • encourage healthy behaviour
  • deal positively with problem behaviour
  • build positive relationships with your children, so that conflicts can be resolved
  • plan ahead to avoid or manage potentially difficult situations

Do both parents need to attend Triple P sessions?

Triple P is more effective if both parents to attend sessions, but it is not necessary that both attend.
