Hydrogen Hybrid Internal Combustion Engine (HHICE) Bus

Quick Facts

Hydrogen Bus | Partners | Quick Facts | Schematic Drawing | Hydrogen Bus Report

  • Canadian partners in the cold weather test are: the Province of Manitoba, Red River College, New Flyer Industries, Kraus Global, Stuart Energy, Winnipeg Transit, Vehicle Technology Centre and the University of Manitoba Transport Institute

  • Enlarge the Hydrogen Bus Schematic drawingThe bus is powered by a Ford Triton V-10 engine specifically designed and built to run on hydrogen instead of gasoline.

  • The hydrogen engine is connected to the hybrid electric drive system. Operating as a hybrid, with the recovery of energy during braking, means this bus is up to 25% more efficient than conventional buses.

  • No carbon dioxide is produced from hydrogen burning and other pollutants are almost nil giving the engine the advantage of ultraclean exhaust.

  • A temporary refueling system is also part of the trial, including a mobile electrolysis unit from Stuart Energy to produce compressed hydrogen using water and electricity.
