Watershed management planning is a cooperative effort by stakeholders, municipalities and government agencies to create a long term plan for the protection, conservation or restoration of water, aquatic ecosystem and drinking water sources within a watershed. It is an integrated process that involves groups of people interested in or affected by watershed issues, and aims to address and resolve priority issues and improve watershed health and sustainability.
All watershed management plans are unique and based largely on the issues and concerns of the community within each watershed. Partnerships, cooperation, local input, and funding are all important components in developing and implementing a successful watershed management plan.
There are opportunities to get involved with a watershed planning initiative near you. Contact your local Conservation District to find out more information on how to contribute ideas or concerns regarding watershed health and sustainability.
