Flood Report for Manitoba

May 11th & 12th, 2007

Table of Contents:

Weather

Environment Canada indicates that some showers are possible in western Manitoba south of Russell today and again on Sunday but rainfall amounts should be 5 mm or less. Some showers expected in areas from Swan River to The Pas on Saturday.

A FLOOD WATCH CONTINUES FOR THE ASSINIBOINE RIVER FROM SHELLMOUTH TO MILLWOOD.

Assiniboine River May 12th, 2007

An updated spreadsheet showing conditions on the Assiniboine River this morning is attached.

Outflows from Shellmouth Dam are still being adjusted several times per day in order to maintain a total outflow near 1700 cfs.

With favourable weather, it should be possible to keep the peak flows in the Shellmouth area below 1750 cfs from now on. This will result in only minimal flooding.

A flood sheet for the Assiniboine River is attached.

Saskatchewan, Carrot, Red Deer River

Red Deer Lake:

The level of Red Deer Lake has declined 0.2 feet during the past two days. Levels of the lake will continue to decline slowly although fluctuations will occur due to wind. While lands and some small roads are still flooded at the Red Deer Lake Settlement, homes are diked and not in danger of flooding.

Lake Winnipegosis:

The level of Lake Winnipegosis is high and still rising. The lake is expected to crest in late May at an elevation slightly lower than that of last year. Some flooding of low lying lands near the lake is likely during days with strong onshore winds

Carrot River—Saskatchewan Boundary to 14 miles west of The Pas :

Levels of the Carrot River are declining very slowly and this will continue for the next 10 days. After that levels will begin to decline faster unless heavy rain develops. Flooding some fields near the river from the Saskatchewan boundary about 14 miles west of The Pas will continue for another week or so.

Saskatchewan and Carrot Rivers at The Pas

River levels at the Pas have risen slightly during the past few days and this will continue until early next week. High outflows from Tobin Lake are being maintained by the Saskatchewan Water Authority due to heavy runoff from rainfall over the North Saskatchewan basin in Alberta last week. The continued high river levels at The Pas will prevent natural drainage from the Pasquia area just southwest of The Pas and will require pumping by Manitoba Water Stewardship and MIT staff to continue.

A flood sheet for the Swan River area is not available for today.
