Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)
What is PLAR?
Prior Learning Assessment Recognition is a process used to identify, document, assess and recognize skills and knowledge. PLAR can help you to identify the skills and knowledge you have for employment opportunities.
Skills and knowledge are learned in many situations including:
family and life
Is PLAR for you?
Have you had a variety of learning experiences in your life?
Have you been involved in volunteer activities?
Do you have five or more years experience in one field?
Are you motivated to update your skills?
Do you take on new roles and responsibilities at work or in your community?
If you answered "yes" to several of these questions, PLAR may be for you.
Your local Manitoba Jobs and Skills Development Centre will work with you to:
set expectations of what PLAR can do and how prior learning will be proven
gather information on past experiences and accomplishments
assess what you have learned and how it can be translated to skills and knowledge
apply the recognition of the skills and knowledge to employment opportunities
The Manitoba Jobs and Skills Development Centre at 111 Lombard Avenue (Winnipeg) provides more in-depth PLAR services to job seekers.

Prior Learning and Assessment Recognition and Apprenticeship
Tradespeople with enough work experience in a designated trade (a predetermined number of years and proven hands-on experience) who want to become fully-qualified journeypersons, can apply to write a certification exam without having to fulfill practical and technical training components. Individuals can also apply for assessment of work experience, level placement testing and review or validation of other jurisdictional credentials.
