New Growing Assurance program to focus on biosecurity for meat processors

Manitoba meat processors can now improve biosecurity in their workplaces by applying for funding from the Growing Assurance Biosecurity Processor Program.

Launched in July, the program aims to provide assistance to eligible abattoirs, assembly yards and auction marts in the adoption of beneficial practices that mitigate risk factors related to biosecurity. This can include funding for training, infrastructure improvements and the purchase of equipment.

"Biosecurity is becoming an increasingly important practice in reducing the potential transmission of livestock diseases," said Dana Gardiner, animal welfare specialist for Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development (MAFRD)

Under the program, provincially or federally permitted abattoirs - as well as assembly yards and auction marts that hold a valid Livestock Dealers License - are eligible for funding at a cost share ratio of 65:35, government to applicant, up to a maximum of $50,000.

MAFRD will conduct a biosecurity assessment at no cost for those that wish to apply to review current biosecurity practices and identify potential objectives for the project.

Once the funding has been distributed, applicants have 18 months to complete their project.

Visit the program page for the application form, terms and conditions and full program details.
