Glenboro Canadian Pacific Railway Water Tower
Designation Date: April 5, 1994 The Glenboro Water Tower was constructed by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in the summer of 1904 to provide water for steam-powered passenger and freight locomotives. The wooden, octagonal water tower is situated alongside the CPR line which was extended to Glenboro in 1886. Inside the tower is a cedar-lined tub set on a wooden support structure. The tub is capable of holding 181,840 litres of water. The ball on the finial atop the tower indicates the water level in the tank. In 1939 an electric motor and pump were installed inside the tower. By the mid-1950s, the structure was no longer required by the CPR as diesel-powered engines had replaced steam locomotives. It is now used by the Village of Glenboro. |
