Bank of Montreal Building

Designation Date: March 6, 1996
Designation Authority: The Village of Ethelbert
Present Owner: Ethelbert
(M)

The former Bank of Montreal was the first financial institution to be established in Ethelbert. The present building was constructed in 1922, replacing the Bank of Montreal’s earlier, modest wood frame structure. The new one-storey brick building incorporated the distinctive elements of Classical Revival architecture, including a flat, unadorned roof line, a projecting cornice and a corner entrance with a pediment and pilasters. The Bank of Montreal remained here until 1931, when the building was purchased by Michael Hyrhorczuk, a prominent Ethelbert resident. The former bank building was used as the new owner’s law office and residence. Michael Hyrhorczuk also operated a successful cattle ranch in the Duck Mountains, served as a reeve and school trustee for Ethelbert and was a founding member and second president of the Dauphin National Ukrainian Festival. In the early 1960s the building was purchased by the Rural Municipality of Ethelbert to serve as its municipal office.
