Glen Elmo School

Designation Date: December 9, 1996
Designation Authority: The Rural Municipality of Rossburn
Present Owner: privately owned

At one time more than 1,500 one-room schools dotted the countryside of Manitoba. Of modest size and appointments, these buildings nevertheless were powerful expressions of civic pride. Local districts were typically named for the local school. Glen Elmo, built in 1929, is a good example of the developments in school design that had attended these little buildings over the course of 50 years. The basic forms—rectangular plan and gable roof—are relieved with the set of windows that opens the whole east side, providing light into the building.
