114 Sowden Street, S.,
Souris

Wright House

Designation Date: July 21, 1997
Designation Authority: The Town of Souris
Present Owner: privately owned

This building is a modest example of a once-popular architectural style known as Italianate. That style, which was selected for many grand homes in the late nineteenth century, was characterized by a shallow hipped roof, tall openings, bay windows and decorative brackets at the roof eaves. All of these elements are present on this house, built in 1896 for the first locally born mayor of Souris, Harry Elvin Wright, who also operated the Souris Modern Groceteria for many years.
