Early settlers in this area built a log school in 1886 and, as it sat on a mound, referred to it as Mound School. In 1889 a new wood frame building replaced the log structure, itself replaced in 1919 by the final building, this one called Opawaka School. This evolution of building services was typical of the development of education in Manitoba, from early pioneer structures to sophisticated one-room facilities. Opawaka School was removed in the mid-1990s and a cairn erected to commemorate its history.
