Riverside School

Designation Date: June 15, 1998
Designation Authority: The R.M. of Whitewater
Present Owner: privately owned

When settlers from around the world began filling up Manitoba's farm country in the late nineteenth century, one of the first public buildings they erected was a school. Naturally, because time and money were at a premium, the resulting buildings were simple. The former Riverside School, built around 1885 is an excellent example. The building is modest, both in terms of size and architectural appointment. But it is not without charm, and the three evenly spaced windows on the sides, capped with angled pediments, give the building a certain gravity, befitting its function as the repository of pioneer hopes and dreams.
