Nordin Farmstead

Designation Date: October 14, 1998
Designation Authority: The R.M. of Rockwood
Present Owner: privately owned

The specific needs of each type of farming operation (grain, dairy, beef) creates its own particular demands on the range and design of buildings. Dairy farms of course require a large barn and milk house. The former Olaf Nordin dairy operation near Teulon is typical in this regard, but special in the designs. The barn (built in 1926) features a standard gambrel-shaped loft but is supported on a solid stone foundation. The house, built in 1920–21, is remarkable. Mr. Nordin was a trained civil engineer and his interest in construction materials is evident. The main floor is of poured concrete, which nicely contrasts with the shingled second storey. The Nordin farm was well-known in the local Swedish community, the site of rollicking barn dances.
