Rhodes Community Hall

Designation Date: July 22, 1999
Designation Authority: R.M. of Ethelbert
Present Owner: Ukrainian Folk Arts Centre and Museum, Inc.

In the early 1930s, the local Ukrainian population of the Rhodes area built a community hall unlike any other in the province. Where other such buildings effectively accommodated various public functions—dances, dinners, political events—within a simple gabled space, the builders at Rhodes wanted a more ambitious building, one that also could be used for theatrical productions. Thus their building was designed with a stage and balcony. The building was last used as a hall in the mid-1980s, but still hosts an annual public luncheon. It has been relocated to the Selo-Ukraina Festival Site south of Dauphin.
