Netley River Cottage, a simple vernacular wood-clad dwelling constructed with lumber brought from the east shore of Lake Winnipeg, is a good illustration of a typical cottage built in the Interlake region of Manitoba at the turn-of-the-century. Built as a summer home for the family of Mr. Francois Xavier Gadiou-Saint Louis, who founded the town site and resort on which it sits, the cozy cottage also is the oldest remaining building in the community in its original condition. The intact cottage, erected by carpenter Mr. Foord, retains all of its original features, including its open-plan living room, added verandah and porch subdivided into bedrooms for additional sleeping room. Occupied and maintained by the Best family for over seven decades, the picturesque property with its orientation toward the waterfront, is an important part of the municipality’s identity.
